Become a Battery Expert

Batteries are used everywhere and will become most relevant in all energy sectors. The highly research-oriented M.Sc. BSE program is sorely dedicated to battery engineering and covers all aspects of the battery value chain. You will learn about battery modelling, perform electrical testing and postmortem chemical analysis and be introduced to recycling processes. The interdisciplinary Master’s degree program is unique in Germany and Europe and offers bachelor graduates in natural sciences or engineering sciences the opportunity to broaden their career prospects. With several institutes from faculties of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics involved in the curricular, students acquire the necessary technical know-how and competencies in the field of battery technology. The M.Sc. BSE will train qualified battery engineers with a wide range of expertise and therefore contributes to overcome the current fundamental change in mobility and energy production.

As an M.Sc. BSE student, you will learn to

  • develop electrical models for batteries
  • evaluate and compare different energy storage technologies
  • understand fundamentals of battery aging processes
  • explain issues related to battery production or deployment in largescale storage systems
  • apply chemical and physical methods to evaluate battery cells and materials

The BSE program is under the academic direction of the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) / Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of RWTH Aachen university, which focuses on energy storage systems and lifetime prediction for batteries. ISEA is also founder and part of the Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL) as interdisciplinary university research center. CARL provides cutting edge facilities and the infrastructure for integrated research and development around the topic of ageing and lifetime mechanisms of power electronics and energy storage devices or systems. This combined expertise and close research network with industry and academic institutions translates directly into the curricula, providing a very application-oriented learning experience.

Attention: For a smooth transition to the M.Sc. BSE, international applicants must complete the German Engineering College  before starting their studies. In this digital qualification program, tailored fundamental knowledge from engineering sciences and natural sciences is refreshed in order to achieve the best possible academic preparation for this highly interdisciplinary M.Sc. BSE. Successful participation in the GEC is also recognized as equivalent to the GRE certificate!

The M.Sc. BSE comprises three semesters of lectures, exercises and practical courses, followed by the fourth semester dedicated to writing the Master's thesis. All modules are organized in blocks throughout the semester and taught using a modern and very flexible digital teaching and learning concept.

To enable international students to adapt to the high research standards at RWTH, the first semester begins with the course “Modern Research Methods”, promoting the acquisition of knowledge and skills in scientific working methods. In addition, two compulsory language courses must be taken to successfully begin the M.Sc. BSE.

Due to a very application-oriented teaching approach throughout the program, students complete a total of three internships in which they are fully involved in current research projects. Already in the first semester, one of these so-called “Research Labs” can be chosen from several subject areas, such as Battery Pack Design and Battery Management System or Recycling and Life Cycle Analysis. In the second semester, students must explicitly complete an industrial internship in the R&D department of a company, followed by another practical research lab during the third semester.
